Watermelon: Like baseball and fireworks, it’s a summer tradition — it just wouldn’t seem like the season is complete without a taste of that sweet red fruit. And now that petite fruit options are available (branded as “personal watermelons”) it’s practical to buy a melon for just one or two.
Ocean Prime, the posh seafood venue in the shadow of The Crescent complex in Dallas’ Uptown neighborhood offers a sophisticated summer cocktail that uses watermelon to good effect. The Watermelon Elyx combines premium vodka and gin, the flavors of lime, basil and ginger, and watermelon purée. Its presentation in a coupe glass with a garnish of melon balls makes it elegant. Ocean Prime shared the recipe, so you can make this refreshing last-hurrah toast to summer at home:
1½ ounce Absolut Elyx Vodka
½ ounce Uncle Val’s Gin
1 ounce basil simple syrup*
½ ounce watermelon purée**
½ ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
5 to 6 dashes Hella Ginger Bitters
Garnish: 3 small watermelon balls on a prism pick.
Combine cocktail ingredients in a cocktail shaker. Add ice. Shake vigorously to chill. Strain half of the cocktail into a coupe glass and half into glass carafe. Place glass carafe atop crushed ice in copper vessel. Garnish with watermelon balls.
Note: An ounce, should you not have a so-marked measuring cup, is approximately 2 tablespoons.
*Basil simple syrup: Bring 1 cup of water to boil. Stir in 1 cup of sugar until completely dissolved. Remove from heat source and add 6 fresh basil leaves. Steep the mixture for 10 minutes. Strain out the leaves and cool to room or chilled temperature.
**Watermelon purée: Process chunks of seedless watermelon in a blender to a smooth purée.
